The story begins with a young man called Paul and his sweetheart, Nest. Paul is a painter and is teaching Nest how to paint. Their setting is the idyllic countryside. Soon we move to London and a poverty-stricken area where we are introduced to Johnnie Moreland and his sister Anne. Johnnie is crippled and uses a crutch.
