The Hunter Hercules is a western adventure set in Texas and it opens with a young man by the name of Chauncy Branrare riding through the prairies. He has come to the Wild West from New York looking for an adventure. Suddenly he hears a woman's scream and dashing to the sound, comes face to face with a black panther about ready to spring at a young girl.

St George Henry Rathborne (1854-1938) was an American author of boys' stories and dime novels. He is believed to have produced over 330 volumes of fiction in the course of a 60-year career. He had a proclivity for and skill in producing outdoor adventure stories, and his best works fall within that category.
