Divorced mother Gloria Bonaventura joins a city scheme that pays her to host a migrant, welcoming the warm and helpful Martine into her Brooklyn home. Her 26-year-old son Nico, unemployed and resentful after being forced out of his basement flat, is deeply sceptical. As Martine bonds with the family, Nico's hostility grows - fuelled by her dubious friends and his own unreliability as a narrator - revealing tensions about altruism, migration and adulthood.
