Christoph Schwöbel analyzes the present religious situation as a situation of radical pluralism. It is characterized by the fact that varying basic orientations of human life and action compete with one another. Against this backdrop, the author attempts to understand the situation of pluralism itself from a theological point of view and offers suggestions how the Christian faith and the Christian church can deal with the situation of pluralism constructively and critically. In the studies published in this volume, the author begins by developing an account of the truth of Christian faith in a pluralistic situation and outlines the prospects for a pluralistic ecumenism. These considerations form the context for theological reflections on shaping the relations between the various religions through a strategy combining tolerance, dialogue and cooperation.
