Anne Käfer studies Schleiermacher's theory of aesthetics in comparison to those of Kant, Schiller and Friedrich Schlegel. She examines each of their concepts of aesthetics, the role of beauty and the sublime and the importance attached to human art. She shows that Schleiermacher's position is to be given preference, since it is based on the insight into the creatureliness of man and thus on the knowledge of the dependence of human experience and human freedom. The awareness of this dependence and thus the religiosity of human beings requires an adequate knowledge of creation as well as the free and true practice of art.
