The relationship between speculation and imagination in Hegel's encyclopaedic system is characterized by a peculiar tension. Speculation is not only the critical purifying of the imagination's contents from its prejudices and errors, but is rather at the same time recognition of the finite, imaginative thinking within its limits, both in the field of epistemology and that of religion. How do speculation and imagination relate to one another in the various parts of the encyclopaedic system in the Logic and the Philosophy of Mind ? The contributions in this conference volume examine in detail this correlation and critically assess the encyclopaedic interaction between speculation and imagination in the spheres of the subjective and the absolute spirit.
