Processions are multidimensional social practices. They represent socio-cultural orders and values as well as producing and regenerating them. Processions communicate religion, society and politics in intersection. Intertwining power, religion and culture, they provide a basis for experiments of ritual dynamics and religio-cultural development. This volume traces these developments by connecting urban processions to the dynamic relationship of "religious-sacral" and "secular-profane". The contributions focus on processions and parades that do not derive directly from or have functions in religious cult or ecclesial liturgy, e.g., triumphal processions, political demonstrations, university parades, or funeral processions etc. The exploration of the ritual relationship between the "religious" and the "secular" spans multiple epochs and includes diverse disciplines.
