Rabies is one of the oldest known diseases of mankind. In India, it is known since Vedic period as corroborated in Atherva Veda. Rabies is a neurotropic disease caused by rabies virus which belongs to family Rhabdoviridae. Rabies virus spread over in almost all the continents and covers more than 150 countries. Especially developing countries are worst hit by this disease where annually more than 50,000 human deaths occur. Awareness of people about this disease and appropriate treatment can only reduce the mortality rate.

The author is Doctorate from University of Lucknow, India. He received fellowship from Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) and awarded Ruchi Ram Sahani Research Award by University for his work. Currently he is associated with National Research Centre on Plant Biotechnology, New Delhi.
