Zusatztext
The Heiligenberg (Abirinisberg) north of Heidelberg was already inhabited in prehistoric times. Later, it became an important place of worship. Abbot Thiotroch (863-875) from the nearby monastery of Lorsch built a basilica on the mountain dedicated to St. Michael. Under Abbot Reginbald (1018-1033), a new monastery building was erected. Under Abbot Reginbald (1018-1033), a new monastery building was erected. The mountain got its name, Heiligenberg, from the patron saint of All Saints' Day. The imposing monastery ruins we see today date back to the 11thcentury complex. Around 1130, Lorsch Monastery also founded Neuburg Monastery in the Neckar Valley. This monastery had a very eventful history. Benedictine monks have been working here again since 1926. On the beautiful floodplain in the Steinach Valley, the Bishop of Worms, Burkhard II, founded the Cistercian monastery of Schönau in 1142. The former monks' refectory of the monastery now serves as a Protestant church.
