The two great world wars of the 20th century pose special challenges in commemoration of death. The sites of remembrance range from memorials of heroes immediately after the First World War to military cemeteries and recently erected or supplemented memorials and memorials that express the process of communicative and collective memory. The memory of the unimaginable masses who died in these two wars has changed over generations. Thus today we also face the memorials and memorials in concentration and extermination camps in two ways: as heirs of a multiple heritage, accepted at different times and developed, discussed and mediated in different ways.
