Five months Leo Tolstoy served as a junker in the Caucasus, studied local customs, talked with interesting people. These impressions became the basis for writing the story "Cossacks". All the events described in the work take place in the Novominskaya village, located next to the Terek, which separates the lands of the Cossacks and Chechens. Here comes to serve Dmitry Olenin.
