This book showcases developments in Chinese for specific and professional purposes. It covers various topics, such as Business Chinese, Chinese for Academic Purposes, Chinese for Tourism, Chinese for Science and Technology, and Chinese for Medical Purposes. As a reflection of the fact that research on Business Chinese dominates the academic field of Chinese for specific purposes, nine (out of sixteen) chapters in this volume address issues related to intercultural communication and approaches in teaching Business Chinese. This book provides insights into effective language learning strategies, curriculum development, and the intersection of language and professional fields. It offers language instructors a comprehensive and specialized resource for teaching Chinese in specific areas, and also serves as a guide for lesson planning with the provision of relevant materials and practical exercises.

Autorenportrait

Dr. Li-Yu Chen is a Professor at the Department of Chinese as a Second Language, National Taiwan Normal University. Her research focuses on different aspects of Business Chinese, and she has been the author of numerous published articles and book chapters on the topic of cross-cultural communication, materials developments and evaluation, and teacher training for Business Chinese. For more than a decade, Dr. Chen has served on the editorial board for Taiwan Journal of Chinese as a Second Language (), and she was also Executive Editor of the journal for some time. Dr. ChaoMei Tu is an Associate Professor at the Department of Chinese as a Second Language, National Taiwan Normal University. She has also been the Associate Director of the Mandarin Training Center, National Taiwan University since 2015. Dr. Tus research focuses on Chinese for specific purposes, Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), and ContentBased Instruction (CBI).
