It sheds new light on the innovative use of agricultural and industrial by-products as substrates, offering a sustainable and economically viable approach to mushroom production. Through this book, readers will gain insights into optimizing growth parameters for various medicinal and edible mushrooms, enhancing their potential for pharmaceutical and nutraceutical applications. The chapters cover topics such as the submerged cultivation of Cordyceps sinensis and Grifola frondosa, the integration of modular robotic systems in mushroom farming, and the recycling of lignocellulosic wastes from date palms. The authors, who are experienced practitioners and eminent scholars, present expert analyses on optimizing cultivation conditions, enhancing biomass production, and maximizing the therapeutic properties of mushrooms. Readers will discover diverse perspectives from expert contributors, addressing critical questions about sustainability, resource efficiency, and the integration of biotechnology in agriculture. Particular attention is given to the economic and environmental benefits of using waste substrates, the role of mushrooms in sustainable agriculture, and the potential for integrating mushroom cultivation into existing agricultural systems. The book also explores the therapeutic applications of mushrooms, highlighting their immune-modulating, antioxidant, and metabolic benefits. This book is an essential resource for researchers, scholars, and practitioners in the fields of biotechnology, agriculture, and environmental science. It offers valuable insights into sustainable agricultural practices and the circular economy, making it a must-read for anyone interested in the future of food production and environmental conservation. Readers will learn how optimizing growth parameters can enhance biomass and metabolite production, offering promising applications in pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals.

Autorenportrait

Mustafa Owaid obtained his Ph.D. in Mycology in 2014 from the University Of Anbar, Iraq. In 2013, he completed a scholarship program in Nanotechnology at the Mushroom Research Centre (MRC) at the University of Malaya (UM), Malaysia. He has been a lecturer at the Ministry of Education, Iraq, since 2005. He also took a sabbatical leave to study the green synthesis of NPs from mushrooms at Chemistry Dep., Gazi University, Turkey. Currently, he is the Director of the Iraqi Mushroom and Truffle Platform (IQMT).   Yee Shin Tan is a mycologist and Associate Professor at the Faculty of Science, Universiti Malaya, and currently serves as the Head of the Mushroom Research Centre. Her research focuses on the biodiversity, biology and biotechnology of fungi in tropical Southeast Asia. Her work integrates fungal diversity and taxonomy with the discovery, domestication, cultivation and breeding of underutilised tropical mushrooms, linking fundamental mycology to biotechnological applications in food and agriculture. She is also involved in national mushroom poisoning cases and training programs with the Ministry of Health.    Dr Phan Chia Wei is Associate Professor at the Department of Pharmaceutical Life Sciences, Faculty of Pharmacy, Universiti Malaya. His research encompasses pharmaceutical microbiology, immunology, and natural products, with a strong focus on medicinal mushrooms, bioactive compounds, and their applications in functional foods and health-related products. His work integrates upstream production considerations with downstream bioactivity, safety, and translational evaluation. He is actively involved in interdisciplinary research, postgraduate supervision, academic publishing, and international collaboration.
